Raising girls’ participation in STEM clubs
Across 12 schools in one district, girls make up 18% of robotics clubs. The clubs are open and registration is free — so why don’t they join?
Problem
The clubs are open to all, free and during school hours. Even so, girls’ participation has stayed below 20% for three years. The district wants 40% within two years.
Your task: a diagnosis of where the barrier really is, and a concrete programme to change it.
Background
In surveys, 52% of girls say “I’m interested, but I don’t want to go when the whole group is boys.” Eleven of the club advisors are men. Club promotion happens at the door during break.
Constraints
Creating separate girls-only clubs (segregation) is not acceptable.
No new teaching posts can be allocated.
The programme must run in all 12 schools at once.
Expected solution
