Cutting plastic to zero in the school canteen

A high-school canteen with 1,200 students produces 900 plastic bottles and 400 single-use cups a day. How do you end this without a bigger budget?

Problem

The canteen meets daily drink demand with single-use plastic. The school wants to announce an environmental policy, but the operator fears losing revenue.

Your task: design a system that removes plastic entirely, protects the canteen’s income and is adopted voluntarily by students.

Background

The school has four water fountains, two of them broken. 60% of students say they bring a bottle from home but buy one when they forget. The canteen sells a bottle for 10 TL and about a third of its daily revenue comes from drinks.

Constraints

No extra budget; the investment must pay for itself within six months.
The canteen contract cannot be changed mid-year.
No mandatory ban can be imposed on students.

Expected solution

A plan of at most two pages: implementation steps, a three-month calendar, a proposal that offsets the canteen’s revenue loss and three metrics you would track.

Kantinde satılan her plastik şişeye 5 TL depozito eklenmesini öneriyorum. Şişeyi geri getiren öğrenci parasını kantin kartına geri alıyor. İlk ay için okul kooperatifi 2.000 TL'lik bir fon ayırır; toplanan şişeler geri dönüşüm firmasına verilir ve gelir fona döner. Böylece sistem ikinci aydan itibaren kendi kendini finanse eder. Ölçüm için kantin kasasındaki barkod verisini kullanırız: satılan şişe sayısı ile geri gelen şişe sayısının oranı haftalık panoda yayınlanır.

Plastiği azaltmanın en hızlı yolu ihtiyacı ortadan kaldırmak. Okulun üç katına da filtreli su sebili koyup 9. sınıflara kayıt haftasında logolu matara dağıtmayı öneriyorum. Maliyeti sponsor bir yerel firmayla karşılanabilir; karşılığında sebillerin üzerinde firma logosu yer alır. Kantinde şişe satışının tamamen kaldırılması yerine fiyatının artırılması, davranış değişimini zorlamadan sağlar. Birinci dönem sonunda satılan şişe sayısındaki düşüş hedefimiz %40.

Bizim okulda kantin zaten cam şişe satıyor, o yüzden bu vaka bize uymuyor gibi. Yine de depozito fikrini müdürümüze anlatacağım.

Matara kampanyasında bir risk var: mataralar kayboluyor. İsim etiketi ve sınıf bazlı takip listesi eklenirse kayıp oranı ciddi düşüyor.

Depozito fikri sahada işe yarıyor, üniversitedeki kulübümüzde benzerini kurmuştuk. Tek uyarım: geri toplama kutusunu kantinin içine değil çıkışına koyun, kuyruk oluşmuyor.
